Luxottica’s special relationship with its local environment makes us particularly sensitive to environmental issues. As a market leader, we believe we have a responsibility- and a unique opportunity- to demonstrate how business can thrive by demonstrating respect and stewardship of the environment in which it operates.
As a global citizen, we are increasingly aware and concerned by the threats posed by climate change, pollution, energy and resource use and other challenging issues.
While balancing economic growth and market expansion with reduced footprint is not an easy task, we believe that environmental and economic sustainability are intertwined. With increasing climate-change regulation, risks and related costs on the one hand, and the development of new sustainable technologies and green opportunities on the other, we see that this balance is not only crucial to the prosperity and quality of life for future generations, but also central to the long term competitiveness of our business.
We know that many of the business activities in our sector, from manufacturing products, powering up offices and stores to transporting goods, have an impact on the environment. We also know that we have a responsibility to take the necessary steps to reduce our impact and encourage others to do the same.
We take our responsibility very seriously. That is why we are committed to continuously monitoring and reducing our environmental impact and contributing to improving the health of our natural resources where we operate.
We strive to guarantee ethical and responsible behavior on the part of our employees and branches and have drawn an environmental protection policy and guidelines at Group level.
We have integrated environmental risks into our corporate Risk Model and Framework, to integrate the management of environmental performance into our core process and ensure that environmental risks are reviewed and audited like any other business risk.
This year, as we celebrated our 50th year anniversary, we took a step back to assess our performance and review our priorities. Among other activities, we have:
• Initiated a Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) throughout our value chain
• Launched an evaluation into options to reduce the volume of packaging in our products
• Established a sustainability Steering Group at the Group level, and created sustainability cross-functional working groups
• Developed ‘green pilot initiatives’ to harness the creativity of our people
In addition, we continue in our commitment to promote sustainable business practice to achieving positive economic results compatibly with quality, safety and the environment. This commitment involves action in the following areas:
• sustainable packaging
• reducing waste
• recycling
• environmental certification
