OneSight on Vision Monday

Milan, Italy, 01.21.2009

vision_monday“OneSight combines the strength of three former Luxottica-sponsored charitable programs and brings together doctors, partners and community volunteers with 64,000 Luxottica employees in 130 countries to provide free vision care and eyewear to those in need. This will allow OneSight and its activities to expand into new areas of the world and ultimately impact even more lives.” Guerra also told Vision Monday,“We are very excited about the huge potential and capabilities of OneSight.

And in addition to the very real help our people provide directly, our foundation’s efforts will have three legs. One is to help directly those who haven’t had the opportunity to see well and provide them devices to help them see. Second, we want to be able to work to enable medicines, pharmaceuticals and studies to cure diseases affecting sight, and third, we want to advance research in
fields like genetics to help devise longterm solutions for sight-threatening diseases.”Guerra added, “The unified structure of OneSight lets us be even more effective in the future. This is not a field for competition, but a field ripe for cooperation and we are also hopeful we can find ways to
cooperate with other leaders on these issues. We are very open to that with other groups.”

OneSight is to be structured through four program areas. Global Eye Care will conduct Global Eye Care Clinics in developing countries where doctors and trained volunteers provide free eye exams and the delivery of recycled and
new eyewear to thousands of adults and children in need. In Regional Eye Care, OneSight volunteers will work together with local charitable partners to provide free vision care and eyewear to those in need in their home countries
through organized regional and Vision Van Clinics across North America and Australia.

In Community Eye Care, local OneSight volunteers will help those in need across North America in local communities through Retail/in-store and outreach programs. And with Preventative Eye Care, the OneSight Research Foundation will provide research grants to find better treatments and cures for vision-threatening diseases and disorders.
OneSight also invests in developing the next generation of optometric professionals through the Dr. Stanley Pearle Scholarship Fund.
“Our mission is to help restore and preserve clear vision for those who cannot afford basic vision care,” said Greg Hare, executive director for OneSight.

“To accomplish this will require Luxottica and the industry working together to help the world see. Across North America, OneSight will continue the work begun by Give the Gift of Sight and the Pearle Vision Foundation,” continued
Hare, adding, in an interview with VM, that these group’s organizational structures will stay in place. “In 2009, we have scheduled 20 weeks of Regional Clinics and
more than 50 stops for our Vision Vans in communities across North America. We will also continue to help those in need through Luxottica and other affiliated retail
stores with our voucher programs for free eyewear and go out into the community to provide eyewear adjustments and screenings in schools and nursing homes. Finally, we will continue to fund research seeking cures for diabetic retinopathy—the number one cause of blindness among adults in the U.S.”
Lions Clubs International, will continue to be a partner with OneSight in its eyeglass recycling activities and in helping to facilitate programs in disadvantaged areas and countries around the world along with other partner groups, Hare told VM. “The new initiative lets us leverage all the resources available through our employees around the world, and those of our industry and business partners.”Hare added that the OneSight.org Web site will continue to be updated with information about U.S. and international programs and communications.

New graphic materials for all OneSight supporters, including independent ECPs who are collecting eyeglasses, will be phased in gradually over the coming year.
