Venice (Italy) – September 11, 2009 – The first edition of the “3-D Persol Award for Best 3-D Stereoscopic Film of the Year” at the 66th Venice International Film Festival will be given tonight, September 11, to The Hole by Joe Dante, which made its world premiere at the 66th Venice International Film Festival.  The Japanese director, Takashi Shimizu, creator of the horror movies Ju-On (the famous American remake was The Grudge and The Grudge 2), gives the Persol 3-D award during this special ceremony.

The Persol 3-D Award will be given to the feature film that best explores this new cinematic frontier, which has attracted the huge creative interest of filmmakers and production houses and is very popular with audiences. The latest generation of 3-D stereoscopic techniques has placed cinemas at the centre of attention and marked a turning point in the history of film that has been called the “third cinematographic revolution” (after sound and colour).

Italian 3-D filmmaker Nadia Ranocchi, film critic Scott Foundas (USA), and film historian Dave Kehr (USA) were the jury members of the Persol 3-D Award selected by festival organizers. The nominees for the award were :

Journey to the Center of the Earth in 3D by Eric Brevig
Monsters vs. Aliens by Rob Letterman and Conrad Vernon
My Bloody Valentine 3D by Patrick Lussier
Battle for Terra 3D by Aristomenis Tsirbas
Coraline by Henry Selick

Jonas Brothers: the 3D Concert Experience by Bruce Hendricks

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs by Carlos Saldanha
Up by Peter Docter
The Hole by Joe Dante

During this edition, the Venice International Film Festival and Persol had the honour of awarding the 3-D film The Hole by Joe Dante, one of America’s most talented directors of the sci-fi and horror-catastrophe genre. Dante belongs to the generation of American directors who got their start at New World Pictures, the studio that Roger Corman created in 1970. His biggest hit was Gremlins (1984). Known for his versatility, Dante has worked as a director, producer, editor, screenplay writer, and film critic.

The film is about Susan and her two teenaged sons Dane and Lucas who move to a house in the country and discover a hole in the floor. With their new neighbour Julie, the group has to face and cope with their fears to discover what is inside the hole.

The annual Persol 3-D Award will be awarded by Takashi Shimizu in the presence of Paolo Baratta, President of La Biennale di Venezia, and Marco Müller, Artistic Director of the Venice International Film Festival.
