Extension of volunteer work and support for research in optometry: this is how we see our future
Looking to the future, the OneSight objective is to improve the quality of eye care to patients through three initiatives:
creating new partnerships that allow the Foundation to focus its resources on the areas of particular need;
supporting sustainable projects that can offer continuous assistance to patients all year round;
increasing awareness of the importance of sight and its care and supporting the training of future generations of optometrists.
During the course of 2011, the Foundation is planning 16 projects within 7 countries. In addition to the already established and successful partnerships in India, Thailand, South Africa and South America, OneSight has developed two innovative projects in China and The Gambia.
1. In China, OneSight will partner with Essilor of China and ZOC Institute in Guangzhou, in a project that in addition to providing primary eye care to plant workers in the Guangzhou area, will support research to demonstrate that good vision is necessary productivity in industry.
2. In Gambia, over 80,000 patients will receive basic vision care thanks to the partnership established between Luxottica and Sightsavers, in line with the Gambia National Eye Care Programme. The main goals of the three-year partnership are to develop human resources and adequate infrastructure aimed at correcting refractive errors, hindered, in fact, by a lack of staff and financial resources.
Luxottica, in perfect harmony with OneSight volunteer, research and development activities sponsored a telethon in 2010 to raise funds for research on Leber’s congenital amaurosis, a rare retina disease.
